The painting appears to be in good condition with stretcher bar indentations and cracking along these lines, craquelure throughout the snow area, the center sky, throughout the elk's body, and in the snow area to the left of the elk's head. The paint layer appears stable. The painting has been examined under blacklight and does not show indication of inpainting. The frame appears to be in good condition with an abrasion at the upper left side, some chip loss along the lower edge and at the lower right corner, and faint miter splits at all four corners.
