This painting is symbolic of that time when the fur trade consisted of the trading and bartering of furs between Mountain Men and Native Americans. In the midst of negotiations, trust was often lacking between the people involved, even though they all tried to get along. In this painting, a Native American is trying to guide the trapper to better locations in search of beaver, but the trapper is very suspicious about the real intentions of his dubious "friend".
